Scottish Wych Elm, Wild Olive Ash, Copper Wire, 23.5 Carat Gold Leaf

To create this piece, locally-sourced wild olive ash 'flowers' were crafted while the wood was still green, and turned thin enough to ensure that light could pass through the wood. The flowers were slow-dried, resulting in natural warping and cracks, which were highlighted with gold leaf. 

 

The wych elm hoop was steam bent and the hoop's interior gilded, creating additional warmth and dimensionality while still allowing the natural beauty of the grain to shine.

 

This piece was inspired by my mother, who follows her own unique path, whose wild spirit refuses to be tamed, whose strength and determination are unsurpassed, and whose light forever shines through.
