Watermelon

2024

Ash, Reclaimed Urban Olive Wood, Communally-Harvested Olive Branches, Copper Wire, Candle

16" L x 4" W x 14" H

Created in response to the devastation of Gaza, "Watermelon" uses candlelight and bent lamination to honor the resiliency and strength of the Palestinian people: wood that should crack under the tension of the tight curves learns to bend and remains resilient.

Reclaimed wood from olive trees - one of the most widespread trees cultivated in all regions of Palestine, and ash, symbolizing the Jewish community, are laminated together, creating a stronger bond - a reminder that our liberation is interconnected.

The lit candle highlights the wood's natural glow, offering a quiet counterpoint to an increasingly darkening world.
